Welfare/Medical Matters

Hey Keble!

We’re your welfare reps this year and our job is basically to make sure life at Keble is as enjoyable and comfortable as possible for students.

Overview
We have big plans for Welfare Teas and other events to ensure some fun (woo) to counteract the stresses of each term, particularly during 5th week “Keble Welfare Week”. We can provide free condoms, lube, and pregnancy tests on request, and will also try to raise awareness of welfare issues (such as STIs, revision, stress, and mental health) — you’ll hear more about events designed to help with these things throughout the year (keep an eye on the Keble Noticeboard FB page for these).

Free Welfare Supplies

If you want us to pidge you condoms (we can provide regular, king size, ultra thin, conform, non latex, mixed flavours), Lube, or pregnancy tests. Just fill in the below form and we’ll pidge your stuff in an anonymous envelope.

Alternatively if you’d rather remain fully anonymous just don’t include your name on the form and instead use a code word – we’ll put your labelled supplies in the welfare pidge so you can just grab your envelope from there.

You can also still sign up to the C-Card Scheme, which can get you free pregnancy tests, condoms and chlamydia tests amongst other things, from participating venues (including the Boots on Cornmarket). To sign-up to this scheme please e-mail either of us and we’ll send you the C-Card form.

We also provide free tampons and pads should you get stuck and need them in the ladies Liddon toilets.

We can also reimburse you for emergency contraception. Please pidge us the receipt with your bank details. Alternatively, some pharmacies such Boots should provide you with free emergency contraception.

Ensuring you feel safe within Oxford is our priority therefore we can provide you with panic alarms. If you would like one please use the form below.

**We can now provide you with earplugs. These are great if you like to study in quiet, particularly in your rooms. If you would like a pair please fill in the form on the website above and we can pidge those to you.**

Peer Support

To boot, our role as welfare officers is to be friendly faces with whom you can chat whenever! We have a fantastic group of Peer Supporters who are always free to talk and discuss any issues too. We will be holding drop-in sessions every other week for anyone who wants a chat. You can also contact our Junior Deans George Adigbli, Leila Tai and Yiqian Ma if you would like to chat to someone outside of college. You can get in touch with them via the Porter’s Lodge.

Welfare Events

There are also a number of events, which will run throughout the year:

  • 5th Week of Michaelmas “Keble Welfare Week”- this will include lots of fun and wholesome events such as a JCR Movie Night and Cheese and Wine Night alongside talks and workshops.
  • Welfare Teas with free food (yay!) in the JCR every week for anyone to come along and hang out with members of the welfare team.
  • Welfare Walks every other week (weather permitting!) around University Parks and Oxford to give you an opportunity to get out of college and in the fresh air.
  • Peer-support drop-in sessions every other week

Weekly notifications and reminders informing you about various events around college and the University can be found on the Keble Noticeboard FB group.

During Freshers’ Week we will be holding various workshops, welfare walks and drop-in sessions as well as a picnic out on Hayward Quad if you need to have a chat. We hope to meet as many of you as possible during the week and if you have any questions just come up and talk to us (we promise we’re nice) drop us a message on Facebook.

Lotsa welfare love and hugs,

Luke and Jem

In the case of a dental emergency advice should first be sought from the College Nurse.  Where appropriate she will arrange an appointment with a dentist.  Treatment of emergencies will usually be under the NHS arrangements.  However, unless patients are exempt from charges on the grounds of age (under 19 and in full-time education), or in receipt of income related benefit (HC2 Certificate, Working Tax Credit), the appropriate NHS fee will be payable at the appointment.

Treatment will be for the relief of pain and stabilisation of the condition.  Any further treatment should be arranged with your regular dentist.  If you do not have a regular dentist and wish to find one in Oxford, you will be given the telephone number to access details of local practices accepting NHS patients.
