Treasurer
The role of treasurer is to look after the JCR’s money and to promote financial responsibility across all the committee positions, whilst making sure the money is spent in a way that makes everyone’s life at Keble as good as possible.
On the day to day it mainly involves keeping track of the budget, so doing reimbursements and paying invoices. There are also some other responsibilities such as organising the matriculation photo, taking care of the TV in the JCR, organising the punts in trinity term, and (arguably most importantly) rent negotiations in Hilary term.
Welfare Officers
As your welfare officers, we are in charge of helping every Keble JCR student be their happiest self! This means organising weekly fun events, yoga, welfare teas (being the bearers of Krispy Kremes every Wednesday) but also being the point of contact for those who might be struggling, and being involved in Keble’s student welfare chain of responsibility. It is an incredibly rewarding role, requiring care and commitment (and budget management skills!). We get the chance to put a smile on people’s faces, provide free snacks, and choose our own activities each week.
To be a welfare rep, you should first train as a peer supporter. Sign up as soon as possible – training is organised by the university and takes place in Trinity term. Email your name to peersupport@admin.ox.co.uk and let the student support officer Layla (Layla-al-katib@keble.ox.ac.uk) know too. Peer supporter training is a really fun and rewarding experience – feel free to come to any of our current peer supporters with questions!
Charities Officers
The charities and donations officers’ roles are a really great way to get involved in the JCR. For the past few years this has been carried out in groups of 3 which I think works the best, but I imagine you could manage the job with 2 people as well.
Our main job is to organise the charities budget and make donations, usually on a biweekly basis. This includes making motions and keeping up to date on current issues that could be donated to. The only other consistent job is organising the charity formals once every term.
Aside from those aspects the role has a lot of flexibility and we have had a lot of fun this year finding new ways to fundraise and raise awareness for different causes.
Arts and Pubs Officers
Arts and Pubs is objectively the funnest role: not only do you have any excuse to meet up in Lamb and Flag to discuss JCR business, but you get to free reign over the creative arts and crafts events for a year. Despite having one of the smallest budgets, you have one of the best events – Keble Arts Festival. This week-long celebration in Hilary term is planned, created and directed by the Arts and Pubs Officers who are Presidents of the Festival, who also open submissions for and edit Keble’s very own magazine,’the fig’. This role is the most flexible – you can organise weekly arts events and meet up to discuss plans each week, or you can do a few bigger arts events and meet your co-officer every day to plan; you get what you give (and it’s such a fun role – you should give it all you’ve got!)
Main responsibilities include: attending JCR meetings, circulating the events newsletter each week, conversing with other officers and societies to create a holistic events newsletter, promoting Keble activities on social media, creating posts for the JCR instagram account and responding to any messages.
There is no requirement for how many arts events you should hold per term: around 1 every 2 weeks is ideal but flexible to your budget and time available.
Keble Arts Festival: you are the Presidents and organisers of a week long celebration of the arts in Hilary term, based on a theme of your choice. Each day should have an event, ranging from arts and crafts, visiting speakers, collaborations with Keble or external societies etc. During the week, you launch and distribute ‘the fig’ – Keble’s very own magazine which you create throughout the term, filling it with submissions from Keblites and doing the editing. You must create a proposal for this in Michaelmas term to apply for funding.
You give what you get: you can do a lot of events, or a few. You can meet with your fellow officer every day, or just once a week.
You MUST attend JCR meetings and will likely meet with other officer ~once a week to send out newsletters, discussion messages to the social media etc. This averages to around 2-5 hours a week.
Equal Opportunities Officer
I organise the budget for and help the Equal Opps reps team to run events (eg. for Black History Month, International Women’s Day, etc.). Our wonderful reps team consists of representatives for gender equality, social backgrounds, LGBTQ, internationals, disabilities, and ethnic minorities. We also support any students who are having issues with harassment, discrimination, or similar, and help them escalate if needed.
I sit in on termly meetings with the college HR/Equality committee, along with the Disability rep, so the JCR can raise issues to college through me.
First Year Affairs Officer
As First Year Affairs Officer, I act as the main link between the Freshers and JCR committee. This involves keeping first years updated with JCR activities, encouraging them to come to meetings and run for JCR roles! I also serve as a contact that Freshers can approach with not only questions about the JCR, but also on any issue that they’d like to speak to somebody about, and if they’d like, I can bring these issues up at JCR meetings, which I must attend weekly, in order to ensure that the first years are represented.
My other responsibilities include helping out with the first-second year accommodation ballots, and sitting on the Freshers’ Week Subcommittee to act as a link between the subcommittee and broader JCR committee. Overall, the position of First Year Affairs Officer is a really rewarding role, as it is relatively flexible in terms of workload and allows an insight into the activities of the JCR early on during the first year at Keble!
Accommodation Officer
As Accommodation Officer, day-to-day duties are to look after the camp/air beds. This involves taking bookings, getting them to people, and dealing with repairs. You also help represent the JCR to the college at termly Domestic Committee meetings. Also, you will help the college accommodation team run the ballot in Hilary/Trinity, ensuring it’s fairness and communicating with other students to help the process.
Your JCR needs you.
